Hamilton Square is part of the Hamilton Park neighborhood, home to a rich mix of boutique retail and services. Quaint cafes, local grocers, sumptuous restaurants and fashionable shops dot the landscape, with more on the way. Local schools are among the top in the state. At the center is the neighborhood's crowning feature: Hamilton Park itself. The five-acre Victorian park is lined with cobblestone streets and nineteenth-century brownstones. After years of faithful use, Hamilton Park has recently undergone a major multi-million dollar renovation. Improvements to the park include new Victorian style lampposts, benches, new walkways, two off leash dog parks, updated playgrounds, landscaping, a fountain, two USTA sanctioned tennis courts and basketball courts and complimentary WiFi.
The Hamilton Park historic district of downtown Jersey City dates back to the late 1800s. The park was named after Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury under President George Washington. Alexander Hamilton was shot and killed in nearby Weehawken in a duel with political rival Aaron Burr, Vice-President to Thomas Jefferson.
